Feeding America San Diego has had the wonderful opportunity to train 47 partner agencies this year in the CalFresh program, and all of them have done amazing jobs in spreading the word about the program throughout San Diego County.

Hunger Action Month 2011 and the CalFresh Challenge
On September 26th, the FASD CalFresh Team held the CalFresh Challenge Kick-Off Event at the FASD warehouse, and got the chance to highlight three of our partner agencies who have done a particularly outstanding job in this last year. These three incredible CalFresh Champions for the year 2010-2011 include: Casa del Sol, Living Word Christian, and Southbay SDA!
Members of these agencies like Analy Berumen, Angela, Marie Najarian, Avelina Reyes, and Praxedes Villareal have all worked very hard this year with their agencies to provide pre-screening and application assistance to their clients. Their work is invaluable in helping many individuals across the county access Calfresh Benefits and additional resources for food.
In addition, nine individuals from the Kick-Off Event came to the Calfresh Express: An Introductory Training for Pantries and People. It was wonderful to train new members of already trained agencies, and begin to develop a relationship with completely new agencies joining our Calfresh Team at FASD.
The Kick-Off Event also served as the beginning of the CalFresh Challenge. FASD joined with the San Diego Hunger Coalition and North County Community Services to host a challenge that gave participants an opportunity to experience what it is like to eat on the average CalFresh benefit in California --$4.36 per day -- for one week. Thirty five community members came to our warehouse to take the "pledge," and help raise awareness about the underutilization of Food Stamps in San Diego County.
