Holiday2013_header2

The holiday season is a time to be with family and friends, share stories, and express gratitude for what we have.
1 in 6 people, including 1 in 4 children, struggle with hunger in San Diego County. These families rely on Feeding America San Diego and an outpouring of support from the community to make ends meet. Together, we can make the season brighter for those who need it most.

Read Jennifer, Donna and Nancy’s stories below to see how your support can make a difference.

Jennifer, BackPack Program Recipient

jennifer-thumbMeet Jennifer, a recipient of the Feeding America San Diego BackPack program at Julian Elementary. She is a single mom with five children.

The location of this rural community makes accessing nutritious food a struggle for Julian families like Jennifer’s. Grocery stores are limited, and transportation is a challenge. She plans her grocery trips around opportunities to drive to bigger grocery stores—often many miles away—that carry more affordable items. In Jennifer’s words, “People don’t realize that a close-knit community like Julian has so many families in need.”

Because of healthy food distributions at Julian Elementary, Jennifer’s family doesn’t have to skip meals. Each Friday, the fresh produce brings excitement to her daughters. “To them, fruit is like candy,” says Jennifer.

Donna, BackPack Program Site Coordinator

donna-thumbMeet Donna Linton, the site coordinator for our BackPack program at Julian Elementary. She assists families like Jennifer’s with accessing nutritious food through Feeding America San Diego (FASD) distributions.

A Julian native, she says many families struggle to put food on the table. Grocery stores are limited, and transportation is a challenge. She says Julian comes together to do the best that they can for families in need—but they depend on partners like FASD. “The kids’ eyes light up when they receive their BackPack bags,” says Donna. “Fruits and vegetables are always the biggest hit,” she adds.

Today, less children at Julian Elementary are hungry. In Donna’s words, the children “depend on the BackPack program. For some, it’s all they really have.”

Nancy, Volunteer & Ambassador

nancy-thumbMeet Nancy Kane, a volunteer for the Feeding America San Diego (FASD) BackPack program. Nancy was inspired to volunteer at FASD when her family and friends held a food drive at their annual holiday party last year. Now, she comes every Thursday morning to help pack bags of nutritious food for families like Jennifer’s.

Today, Nancy is a champion for hunger relief and an Ambassador for the organization, which involves attending special events and giving tours of the Distribution Center. When asked about her impact, she says, “I picture these kids now coming home and having something to eat over the weekend. It’s so important.”
